NOVEMBER 13th book — The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek (2019) is a historical novel by Kim Michele Richardson that tells the story of Cussy Mary Carter, a 19-year-old librarian with blue skin who delivers books to the remote areas of the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky during the Great Depression. The novel explores the themes of courage, strength, prejudice, community, and the power of books. Cussy Mary lives with her father, a coal miner and labor organizer, and faces discrimination and danger because of her genetic condition. She also honors her mother’s love of books by serving the hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek. (Recommended by Brenda and Donna)
